Mineral sunscreen used to be cakey white paste that would NEVER blend in - and it certainly didn’t play well with other beauty products. But it has come along in leaps and bounds in recent years. 

Today, you can get mineral sunscreens that contain nourishing ingredients and that won’t cause breakouts. In fact, you can easily integrate SPF-makeups into your routine (trust us, you won’t even notice that it’s sunscreen!).

The Difference Between Mineral Sunscreen and Natural Sunscreen

The beauty industry isn’t strongly regulated so companies often make claims about their products being ‘natural’ when it isn’t really true. At Unhako, we don’t stand for greenwashing. That is - the practice of making untrue or unsubstantiated claims about how natural a product is. 

In sunscreen terms, a product labelled ‘natural’ can mean anything from the sunscreen being mineral-based through to it containing a single ingredient of natural origin. 

That’s why we’ll use the term ‘mineral’ to describe our better-for-you sunscreens. 

Mineral Sun Protection

Mineral sunscreens derive their sun protection from titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These ingredients are found in nature then processed to create a cream that physically deflects the sun’s UV rays.  

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, are absorbed by the skin. If you use them, traces of these chemicals can be found in your urine, blood, and breast milk. And some of the chemicals can be fairly nasty (just ask the Environmental Working Group). 

There's nothing better than staying cool & fresh. Sunscreen keeps your skin looking fresh, and doesn't take long to apply.

Reasons Why Mineral Sunscreen is your Best Choice

According to Readers’ Digest, mineral sunscreen is better because it: 

1. Protects you from the full spectrum of UV radiation;
   
2. Is kinder to sensitive skin; 
   
3. Offers immediate protection from the sun;
   
4. Some can be applied over foundation;
   
5. Can be invisible too;
   
6. Is less likely to cause acne. 
   

They left out that it is more commonly reef safe - so it doesn’t cause coral bleaching like many other sunscreens. (Always read the label though! As we said, the beauty industry is rife with misleading claims.)
