Ingredient Spotlight: Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is showing up in everything! Foundations, sunscreens, concealers, primers, and moisturizers are all flocking to the marvelous molecule for good reason. 

It's a naturally-occuring hydration powerhouse. 

There are plenty of reasons to love hyaluronic acid!

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar molecule found naturally in your skin. Its job is simple: bind water to collagen. 

As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid we store in our epidermis (the outermost layer of our skin) significantly decreases. This means that our skin's most visible layer gradually loses its ability to bind and retain water molecules. 

As you might guess, this leads to your skin looking less hydrated, less dewy, and less plump.

How does hyaluronic acid work?

Hyaluronic acid is an incredible molecule for hydrating your skin. Its ability to bind to collagen on one side and water on the other helps to smooth your skin. Fans of HA often say that it seems to 'fill' wrinkles in a way that softens them.

But it goes beyond just 'moisturizing' your skin, it's capable of drawing moisture from the air and holding it in your skin. 

In fact, it can hold almost 1000 times its own weight in water. That's how it works to plump your skin! By drawing in additional moisture, HA softens the appearance of your laugh lines and other wrinkles - helping you age gently. 

Adding hyaluronic acid to your self-care routine

As if hyaluronic acid could get any better, its beneficial for all skin types. 

For dry and/or mature skin, the benefits of its ability to hydrate and plump are obvious.  

Oily and combination skin also benefit from it since both skin types still crave hydration. HA is a lightweight hydrator, so you don't need to put thicker lotions on your already oily skin. It helps create the balance you're looking for. 

As for sensitive skin, it's perfect. Adore Beauty notes that "there are no proven side effects to applying it topically" and there are very few people who report reacting to HA in any way. So it's an incredible way to soothe, calm, and hydrate sensitive skin.     

Can you use hyaluronic acid every day?

Absolutely! 

As with any new product, it's best to ease into using it to see how it works for you. 

Start using it morning or night as part of your usual self-care routine. If your skin is craving more moisture (like it might in winter!), feel free to use it twice a day. 

HAs are wonderful, naturally-occuring molecules that pack in hydration for dewy skin.

Using hyaluronic acid with other products

It works really well with AHAs or really anything else where the active ingredient tends to be quite drying. Since it's non-reactive, HA hydrates while the other active ingredients do what they do best.
